Hayley Williams Market Research

To be able to carry on making Hayley successful with this music video i wanted to find out in more depth what makes her so unique compared to other females artist who's genre is pop.

I then began to look for similar artists on youtube.

JoJo
Although a few years ago JoJo released a few successful songs she has failed to stay in the charts and get recognition for audience. After researching the difference it seemed that JoJo, although she is pretty and has a good voice she is very similar to other female artists amateur or professional in the way in which the song she sings all sound fairly similar the videos are all performance with a small element of narrative. However Hayley on the other hand is edgy and different in her style she changes the genre she sings regularly. As well has how different and diverse her music videos are.

JoJo "Baby its you"

Cheryl Cole has been very successful with her recent solo career reaching number 1 for many of her songs, she has become an icon for pop artists and as a general female role model, although as pop is more mainstream than indie so cheryl cole is more well known in the world, Hayley has been described to be the cheryl cole of indie music, this is supposedly down to both their appearance and style of what ever genre.

Cheryl Cole "parachute"
Cheryl's videos are mainly performance based with her not only singing but also showing her other talents such as dance, this is where Hayley differs as to make her edgy so doesn't conform to the stereotype of pop music but instead has a slight 'rock' image with bright hair and clothes this reflects in her music and videos.

B.O.B and Hayley Williams Audience

Audience research is a systematic and accurate way of finding out about your audience. There are two main things that audience research can do:

(1) estimate audience sizes, and

(2) discover audience preferences.

The audience will change in terms of the way people like to listen to their music. For example the audience for going and buying their music from a shop maybe be different to the audience that watched paramore (Hayley William's band) when doing twilight's theme song. I will now explore 3 different audiences that both apply to B.O.B and Hayley Williams.

Store audience;

This audience for most songs sold in stores now a days isn't as popular as it used to be, this is due to knew technologies such as youtube and Itunes, so the main audience for stores are the older generation as it is far more expensive to buy an album then to select a few songs from itunes which is mainly what happens. When Hayley's with her band there's a very specialized market for her music as it isn't very mainstream so only fans will purchase their albums/singles. However Hayley as a solo artist Is a lot more mainstream and especially the song 'airplanes' with B.O.B has raised sales everywhere for her music. This means that both B.O.B and Hayley are fairly mainstream artists so a younger market will always be attracted to buying music from stores. However the problem about the new technologies does still affect their store sales.

Youtube audience;

This is the audience that whilst fans for Hayleys old band maybe searching for the bands music, they may come across some of her solo music.

Youtube is the prime audience for mainstream artists such as B.O.B and Hayley as statistics show that the highest amount of people who use/ watch youtube, fall into the 16-34 bracket. Which is basically what their target audience is starting from a few years younger. For B.O.B and Hayley the audience isn't a very old one so youtube is perfect for their fans to view their music.

Film Audience;

In this case it is mainly about Hayley as B.O.B is a new artist who is concentrating on his rapping career and has yet to expand himself to other media. In her former band Hayley was given an opportunity to do the sound track for the twilight movie. Seeing as this is a huge success in the film and book industry this was publicity dynamite. Hayley gained recognition from people who had never heard of her music before and consequently gained many more fans/ viewers.

'According to a spokesperson for their label, Paramore will have a pair of brand-new songs — "Decode" and a still-untitled second song — on the film's soundtrack, which hits stores on November 4. Back in July, director Catherine Hardwicke revealed that a song from Muse (author Stephenie Meyer's favorite band) will also be included.' James Montgomery

Music video questionnaire (Hayley Williams)

1. What genre would you associate Hayley with?

2. Specifically, what about Hayley's music makes her Successful?

3.What recurring themes would you expect to find in a video of this genre?

4. What would you expect in a Website for her?

5. What would you expect on the front cover of her album?

Analysis of feedback

1. The majority of our audience thought that Hayley was either indie or pop, there was confusion as people didn't no much about either her previous band or her new success as a solo artist.

54% Indie music
42% Pop music
13% Alternative music
1% other

Sample of 20 people. Aged 14-30

2. Our audience think Hayleys successful as she is edgy and different to other female artists. And is also a attractive role model who inspires people to be like her.

3. The majority of people said that you would see an element of performance in her videos as she always has done. They also said that it usually tells a story so also a bit of narrative content in as well.

4. Obvious things were pointed out about the website, home page, contact page, but a few people suggested the picture of the butterfly which is a symbol of paramore which could be changed to be made more famine to brand her as a solo artist.

5. Once again the results showed that people where listing obvious things like song names and her name, 90% of them said she should be a feature on the front cover.

Research into Hayley Williams

Hayley Nichole Williams, born December 27, 1988, is an American singer, songwriter and the lead vocalist of the band Paramore.

Life and career In 2002, at the age of 13, Williams moved from her hometown, Meridian, Mississippi, to Franklin, Tennessee, where she met former band members Josh Farro and Zac Farro in school. Shortly after arriving, she began taking vocal lessons with Brett Manning. While still in school, she tried out for a local funk cover band called The Factory where she met Jeremy Davis.

Williams was discovered in 2003 by managers Dave Steunebrink and Richard Williams who signed the 14-year-old to a production deal. According to former manager Jeff Hanson in an interview with HitQuarters, at the time she was writing pop songs with top songwriters in Nashville. Williams was introduced to Atlantic Records A&R Tom Storms through Richard's attorneys Jim Zumwalt and Kent Marcus, and then signed to the label by Jason Flom. The label's original plan for their new artist was to make her a solo pop artist but Williams objected to this, saying that she wanted to be part of a band and play alternative music. Atlantic decided to go along with her wishes and she then formed Paramore with Josh Farro, Zac Farro, and Jeremy Davis.

The music of Paramore was originally supposed to come out on Atlantic Records but the label's marketing department decided it would be better for the image of the band to not have them attached to a huge label. They instead released their music through a cooler niche label in Fueled by Ramen.

In 2007, Williams appeared in the music video for "Kiss Me" by New Found Glory.

In the 2007 Kerrang! Readers' Poll she finished second to Evanescence's Amy Lee in the "Sexiest Female" category, going on to win the first place spot for "Sexiest Female" a year later in the 2008 poll, and again in the 2009 poll. She also appears as a playable character in the video game Guitar Hero World Tour.

Williams wrote and recorded the song "Teenagers", which was featured in the soundtrack for the film Jennifer's Body. After the release of "Teenagers", Williams stated that she had no plans to establish herself as a solo artist. In 2010, she appeared on the tracks "Airplanes" and "Airplanes (Part II)" from alternative rapper B.o.B's debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. "Airplanes", later released as a single, peaked within the top ten in nineteen countries, including number one peak positions in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Paramore;

Paramore was created in Franklin, Tennessee in 2004, with Hayley Williams (lead vocals/keyboards) alongside Josh Farro (lead guitar/backing vocals), Jeremy Davis (bass guitar) and Zac Farro (drums). Prior to forming Paramore, the other members of what was soon to be Paramore had been "edgy about the whole female thing" of having Williams as singer, but as they were good friends she began writing with them and eventually became a member. The band has released three studio albums, All We Know Is Falling, Riot!, and Brand New Eyes as well as two live albums and three EPs. In June 2009, the band welcomed Taylor York (rhythm guitar) as an official member, although he had already been playing as a touring member with the band since 2007.

In 2006, Paramore started touring outside of the US for the first time, which included a headline tour of the UK and supporting British post-hardcore rockband The Blackout on the Give It A Name Festival in Europe.

Hayley as a solo artist has decided to go more mainstream then her previous indie band that had a very specialized audience. She has changed her genre to 'pop' so that there will be wider audience. This was in order to brand herselve as different to the band. Paramore have currently split up as a band so she can consentrate on being successful in her solo career.

I came across B.O.B when i heard the song 'airplanes' and decided to research him more as he is a fairly knew artist.

At just 19 years old, the rapper - born Bobby Ray Simmons - has become a breath of fresh air in Atlanta’s snap and trap-obsessed scene. Known primarily for his heavy smokers anthem, “Cloud 9,” and the frenetic energy of his song “Haterz Everywhere,” B.o.B scored a record deal with Atlantic Records while he was still in high school. Now, the teen-aged rap phenomenon is ready to bring his genre-bending style nationwide with his highly anticipated debut, The Adventures of B.o.B.

B.o.B made the decision very early in his young life to pursue a career in hip-hop. He started rapping at the age of 13 after studying classic albums from DMX and Eminem. With the encouragement of his older brother, B.o.B started feverishly writing down anything and everything. "At the time, Joe Budden was poppin' and my brother told me when Joe was 15 he used to fill up notebooks with rhymes," says B.o.B "That lit off a light bulb for me and I was like damn, I need to do more than that. Then from seventh grade up to tenth grade, I just started filling up notebooks with lyrics. Then it got to the point where I was just writing them in my head."

While still in junior high school, B.o.B formed a group with his cousin Swag, called The Klinic. The two young MCs were able to buy a simple studio set-up that included the beat-making program Fruity Loops. They quickly started crafting their own songs and performing at open mics around Atlanta. Their manager, B Rich, introduced them to a local ATL rapper named Playboy Tre of the Georgia Durt camp, and he taught the young'ns how to use his professional studio.

The Klinic continued to collaborate until their senior year of high school in 2006, when B.o.B's cousin decided to leave home in order to attend college. Faced with a tough decision, B.o.B chose to continue rapping, this time as a solo artist. "I called my manager and was like, 'I think I'm just going to start working at the mall for a little while and get some money so I can really start pursuing music like I want to,'" he remembers. "Him and Playboy Tre came by my house and were like, 'Look man, we can get you a deal within a year, don't give up!'"

In mid-September of '06, just two weeks after going solo, B.o.B performed at Club Crucial, where TJ Chapman, founder of the national DJ conference TJ's DJ's, was in attendance. After hearing the rap rookie perform "Cloud 9," TJ was convinced he was in the presence of a star. "That was the first time I performed 'Cloud 9' and I got a standing ovation," says B.o.B "TJ Chapman was amazed. He linked up with B Rich, who let him hear my music, and TJ wanted to be involved in the team."

With the budding MC's demo in hand, TJ, B.o.B and B Rich flew to Miami to meet platinum producer Jim Jonsin. After one listen, Jonsin offered B.o.B a spot on his label. On October 3, 2006, B.o.B signed to Atlantic Records through Jonsin’s Rebel Rock. "I'm really focused on painting a picture of myself as a musician and an artist and not just a rapper," says B.o.B "I feel like I'm not just making rap music; I feel like I'm changing music, period."

The gifted showman's debut album, The Adventures of B.o.B, is a fascinating journey into the Atlanta artist's far-reaching imagination. On the track "Not Alone," a song B.o.B describes as an alternative rock chant, he touches on his pain as a child who was unable to fit in with his own peers. The Tombz-produced cut, "Camera," explores the story of a young woman who chooses life as a stripper over a college education.

B.o.B continues to rap to the ladies on "Cyber Heaven," where he claims his lovin' will take them out of this world, while “Haterz Everywhere” featuring Rich Boy, a song that has flooded the South since its release in early 2007, proves his stronghold over the competition. B.o.B’s most honest reflection of his artistic intent comes on "Trippin'," where he raps about using his craft as a therapeutic means of solving his feelings of eccentricity. "I feel like I have a really different perspective," he says. "When I grew up it was really hard for me to figure out why I felt that way, like I really felt like I was from another planet. Now, it's the opposite. All of that time I spent developing my talent and really analyzing myself, now I feel like I can express all of that and give all of my energy and love to the world."

After producing the majority of his album by himself, and learning to play multiple musical instruments - including the piano, trumpet and French horn - B.o.B is destined to spread his message of creativity and empowerment through his music. "I just want to show people that there are endless possibilities of what you can do," he says. "You don't just have to be a rapper, you don't just have to be a trapper; you can be anything you want to be and whatever you do, just love it and it will show."

From the bio on his website i have found out loads of new information on how he isn't so much a knew artist but is knew to the charts and other recognizable rewards in the music business. He has only 3 successful songs that have made it big. One of them includes airplanes which has helped him move to his successful path.

B.O.B is always accompanied by other artist. This is fairly normal for rap artists as there is only a small audience for solely rap music, so rap artists are usually but together with another artists who either sings the chorus or the verses.

Song choice

Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky
Are like shooting stars
I could really use a wish right now (wish right now, wish right now)
Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky
Are like shooting stars
I could really use a wish right now (wish right now, wish right now)
Yeah
I could use a dream or a genie or a wish
To go back to a place much simpler than this
Cause after all the partyin' and smashin' and crashin'
And all the glitz and the glam and the fashion
And all the pandemonium and all the madness
There comes a time where you fade to the blackness
And when you're staring at that phone in your lap
And you hoping but them people never call you back
But that's just how the story unfolds
You get another hand soon after you fold
And when your plans unravel
And they sayin' what would you wish for
If you had one chance
So airplane airplane sorry I'm late
I'm on my way so don't close that gate
If I don't make that then I'll switch my flight
And I'll be right back at it by the end of the night
Can we pretend that airplanes
In the night sky
Are like shooting stars
I could really use a wish right now (wish right now, wish right now)

After research of loads of different genres i came to the conclusion that in order to brand my artist as she comes out with her solo career it will be best to go mainstream. The music i have chosen is rap/pop music which comes with a wider audience than her rock/indie band.
I wanted a song that had something about wanting an aspiration for example in this context a wish to become famous, i liked the line 'i could really use a wish right now' as this is the main basis to my video. The lyrics also refer to having a 'genie or a wish' which relates the song to my idea of fairy tales as a genie is well known to be in aladdin.

The idea of fairy tales

When planning my music video i wanted a theme throughout, i wanted it to illustrate a strong moral meaning of good and bad this is because i wanted to aim my audience at teenagers. I thought that fairy tales would not only represent this perfectly but would also tie in which the life of the artists, which is sometimes described as a 'dream world'. I then put together loads of different pictures to give me inspiration.
